The South, predominantly Virginia where numerous battles were fought. Other than Antietam, the two battles of Bull Run and Gettysburg, most of the fighting was on Southern soil. Also the south agonized an unreasonably high percentage of sufferers and the Union barrier compounded the economic adversity. The Emancipation Proclamation also demolished the economic foundation for Southern life.
