Bases provide hydroxide ions (OH–) or other negatively-charged ions that react with hydrogen ions in solutions, thereby reducing the concentration of H+ and raising the pH. The base raises pH by providing hydroxide molecules that scoop up hydrogen ions and removes them from solution.
